Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and Fertility: What You Need to Know

Conceiving with PCOS

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder affecting many women of reproductive age. With PCOS, the ovaries may not regularly release eggs, leading to anovulation (the absence of ovulation) and irregular menstrual periods, making conception more difficult.

If you are living with PCOS and hoping to conceive, Palm Beach Fertility Center is here to assist you. Give us a call at (888) 819-5177 to schedule a consultation.

How PCOS Impacts Fertility

PCOS represents 80% of anovulatory infertility cases. It is important to note that this doesn't mean that women with PCOS cannot conceive. Most women with PCOS can indeed conceive; however, it may take them longer to become pregnant, since the hormonal imbalances caused by PCOS can interfere with the healthy development or proper release of eggs from the ovaries.

Treatment Options for PCOS

The treatment of infertility in women with PCOS initially includes preconception guidelines, such as lifestyle changes. A healthy diet and regular exercise are often recommended as first-line treatments. A medication called clomifene may also be recommended for women with PCOS who are trying to get pregnant, which encourages the monthly release of an egg from the ovaries.
