What Is PGT?

The IVF process is quite complicated and involves many different steps. During IVF treatment, you will need to undergo the preimplantation genetic testing (PGT), which is where we screen the embryos to determine any genetic disorders and or gender. The primary purpose of PGT is to ensure embryos are not showing signs of disorders before we make the transfer, especially if your family is at high risk of inheriting one.

The Embryo Biopsy Process at Palm Beach Fertility Center

PGT is performed on embryos in a laboratory, which means that the test is always performed in conjunction with the in-vitro fertilization cycle. To help us screen the embryos before they are transferred, it is possible to remove a cell so that the genetic material can be easily analyzed.

The steps of the embryo biopsy process typically go as follows:

  • Egg retrieval is performed using an ultrasound-guided needle.
  • Combined with the partner’s sperm in the IVF Laboratory and placed in the incubator for fertilization and embryo growth to the 8 cell stage.
  • Next, one or two cells will be biopsied from the embryo(s), and PGT will be performed.
  • Normal embryos are transferred to the uterus on day 5-6 following egg retrieval.

We understand how confusing PGT and embryo biopsy can seem, which is why we are always here to answer your questions. Dr. Mark Denker will address all of your concerns - call us now at (888) 819-5177 to make an appointment.
